MOT Questions

Here are some of the most common questions about an MOT.

If you have any more, just give us a call on 01792 795705 or send an email to info@wgdaviesmot.com

What is an MOT?

An MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is an annual test required by law for vehicles over three years old in the UK.  It ensures that your vehicle meets the minimum safety and environmental standards.

How do I know if my vehicle needs an MOT?

Vehicles need to undergo an MOT test every year once they are over three years old.  You can check when your MOT expires by looking at your test certificate or by inputting your registration here

Do I need to book an MOT test?

If you own a car it's your responsibility to make sure it's tested annually.  As well as the obvious safety and performance issues, you cannot legally drive your car on the roads or renew your road tax if you don’t have a valid MOT and you could also risk being fined up to £1,000.

When can I book my MOT?

You can book your MOT up to one month (minus a day) before your current MOT expires without losing any days on your existing certificate.  This allows you to retain the same renewal date.

How long does an MOT take?

An MOT test typically takes between 45 minutes to an hour.  However, if your vehicle requires repairs or additional work, it may take longer.

What happens if my vehicle fails the MOT?

If your vehicle fails the MOT, you will be advised of the reasons for failure and you will need to have these issues fixed and then present your vehicle to retake the MOT test.

Can I drive my vehicle if it fails the MOT?

You can only drive your vehicle if it has a valid MOT certificate and your previous MOT certificate is still valid.  If the vehicle has serious defects, it must be repaired before it can be driven.

How much does an MOT cost?

The cost of an MOT test varies but the government sets maximum MOT test fees (here) and that is currently £54.85.  Prices for MOTs on for other types of vehicles can differ.

What happens if my MOT expires

If your MOT expires, you must stop driving your car and book an MOT test as soon as possible.  You may then drive your car to the MOT test centre ONLY.  You shouldn’t drive anywhere else until the MOT has been renewed.  Be aware there is no grace period.  Driving without a valid MOT certificate is illegal and can result in fines, points on your license, and invalidation of your insurance.

Can I get my MOT done while my vehicle is being serviced?

Yes, many garages offer combined MOT and service packages.  This can be both convenient and sometimes cost-effective.

How can I book an MOT?

You can book an MOT online, over the phone, or by visiting a local MOT test centre.  Be sure to choose an approved MOT testing station like WG Davies, Swansea.  You can call us on 01792 795705 or book your MOT online here or send us an email to info@wgdaviesmot.com.

What should I do to prepare my vehicle for an MOT?

It is a good idea to check some basics like lights, windscreen wipers and the horn, as well as the condition of the tires – these are simple reasons for a failed test.
