Understanding Aircon Regassing: Over time the refrigerant gas in a vehicle's air conditioning (A/C) system can become depleted through usage, dissipation or even leaks.

When the refrigerant level is low, the A/C system cannot effectively cool the air, leading to reduced performance.  Aircon regassing should involve inspection and maintenance of the A/C system, as well as replenishing the refrigerant – all of which is crucial to keep your vehicle’s air conditioning system running efficiently.

If you notice any signs of reduced cooling performance, leaks or unusual sounds from the A/C system, it might be time to book a regassing service with a qualified technician.

The Regassing Process:

  1. Initial Inspection: Before regassing, a technician will inspect the A/C system for any visible signs of damage or leaks, including checking the compressor, hoses and connections.

  2. Recovering the Old Refrigerant: If there is still some refrigerant left in the system, it is usually recovered using a specialized machine to avoid releasing it into the atmosphere.

  3. Vacuuming the System: The A/C system is then vacuumed to remove any moisture and air. Moisture can cause damage to the system and reduce the efficiency of the refrigerant.

  4. Leak Detection: The technician may conduct a leak test to ensure there are no leaks in the system. This is often done using UV dye or electronic leak detectors.

  5. Recharging with Refrigerant: Once the system is confirmed to be leak-free, the technician will refill the system with the appropriate type and amount of refrigerant gas as specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

  6. Adding Lubricant: Along with the refrigerant, the technician may add a small amount of lubricant to the system to ensure the compressor and other components operate smoothly.

  7. Testing the System: After regassing, the technician will test the A/C system to ensure it is functioning properly.
