Choosing the right garage for your MOT and servicing

Choosing a garage for your MOT

Choosing the right garage to look after your vehicle, including servicing, maintenance and the MOT (Ministry of Transport) can be daunting.

Here are some tips to help you make that choice:

  1. For an MOT look for Authorized Test Centres: Ensure the garage is an approved MOT test centre. Approved centres will display the blue sign with three white triangles, indicating they are authorized by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
  2. Check Reviews and Recommendations: Look for reviews and ratings online to see what other customers have experienced.  Websites like Google, Yelp, or Trustpilot can provide valuable insights.  Additionally, ask friends, family, or colleagues for recommendations.
  3. Consider Location and Convenience: Choose a garage that is conveniently located for you, perhaps near to your home or workplace, or perhaps one with good waiting facilities while they work on your vehicle.
  4. Compare Prices: We do not think price should be the sole factor you consider when making your decision but it is good to know what is included in the price and if there are any additional charges.
  5. Look for Additional Services: Some garages offer combined MOT with service packages which can save time and money.  Look for a garage which provides additional services like repairs, servicing, wheel alignment, aircon regassing or diagnostics.
  6. Check for Certifications and Qualifications: Verify that the mechanics and technicians are qualified and certified.  If in doubt ask.
  7. Visit the Garage: Consider visiting the garage beforehand to get a sense of their professionalism and customer service.  If you find a friendly, well-maintained, clean and organised garage that can be a good indicator of quality service.
  8. Check Warranty and Guarantees: Ask whether the garage offers any warranties or guarantees on their work.  This can provide additional peace of mind.
  9. Consider the Garage’s Reputation: Established garages with a long history of service are often more reliable.  Check how long the garage has been in business and their reputation in the community.
  10. Ask About Their Equipment:  Modern garages will have up-to-date equipment and diagnostic tools which will enable them to carry out accurate and efficient servicing or MOT tests.
  11. Assess Customer Service: Good customer service is not to be underestimated.  All staff should be friendly, helpful and willing to answer any questions you might have about the work you need on your vehicle or the MOT process.
  12. Verify Their Insurance: Ensure the garage has adequate insurance to cover any potential damage to your vehicle while it is in their care.

By considering all of these factors, you can make an informed decision and choose a garage that provides reliable, efficient and professional work on your vehicle, whether you need an MOT, servicing, diagnostics or other services.
